About Walk A Mile

We live in a complex world, fraught with tragedy and marred by inequality. In the face of these hardships, we are often unable to focus on anything other than ourselves. Empathy is sorely lacking, and fulfillment seems elusive: we may want to help, but we don’t know how.

It doesn’t have to be this way. What if something as mysterious as empathy itself could be captured and consumed in the span of a day, a weekend, or a ten-day tour? What if you could truly walk a mile in someone else’s shoes?

Here at Walk A Mile, we’re in the business of empathy. We design bespoke immersive experiences that will give you everything you need to truly understand the life of another.

Our human experience concierge has a finger on the pulse of the most pressing issues facing humanity today to curate the most topical destinations. Each package is hand crafted to help you fulfill your empathic potential, from authentic clothing and living accommodations to a dossier of cultural information and, in some cases, complete physical transformations performed by our staff of professional embodiment consultants.

We know you. You’re eager to break free from the confines of your 9-to-5. You’re ready to make your move. Make a real difference. So get out there. With Walk A Mile Bespoke Empathy Tourism, the thrill of true empathy is just a click away.

A Day in Their Shoes. Empathy that fits in your schedule.

If you’re new to the rigors of empathy tourism or have an especially packed iCal, we recommend beginning with one of our day trips. We’ve worked hard to condense the most meaningful aspects of a lived experience into an itinerary filled to the brim with equal parts action and introspection.

Carefully Curated Summer 2016 Days

Homelessness: Equipped only with the clothes on your back and a tattered sign—painstakingly hand-distressed by our aesthetics department—you’ll be dropped off at an optimized location to try your hand at panhandling. Our transportation coordinators will make arrangements to pick you up at dusk. Starting at $500

Stop-and-Frisk Policing: You’ve seen the videos—shaky iPhone footage of invasive search techniques and arrests gone awry. But these videos can only go so far to help you understand the true cost of aggressive policing protocols. After eliminating any inherent physical factors that would prohibit your search or arrest (e.g., presenting as White) through the application of movie-quality disguise, you will be dropped off in a high-crime area. A team of highly trained Walk A Mile personnel planted in the area will publicly execute an exact replica of a stop-and-frisk policing procedure, with choreography based on accounts of real arrests. Starting at $500

Weekend Experiences Immerse yourself in another life.

Our weekend-long experiences allow you to truly step out of your routine and devote your full attention to the cultivation of your empathy. We’ve developed these experiences as companions to our most popular day trips—perfect for intermediate empathy tourists.

Fully Crafted Weekend Experiences

Homeless For A Weekend: You’ll be guided to a sleeping location in an out-of-the-way alley, complete with all the necessary accoutrements to prepare a meal out of the food you’ve been given by passers-by. Experience for yourself what it’s like to sleep on the street‚ but don’t worry—a Walk A Mile guard will be monitoring you from a comfortable distance. In the event of bad weather, rescheduling is available at no extra charge. Starting at $2,000

“Resisting Arrest” Extended-Stay Package: Once you’ve been detained in one of our replica squad cars, complete your immersion in the contemporary American police state with an overnight stay in a typical jail. You’ll be booked and processed—the mug shot is yours to keep—in one of the cells we’ve rented in an out-of-use wing of a real, functioning jail. Gluten-free versions of prison meals available upon request. Starting at $2,000

Food Stamps: Inspired by the pioneering efforts of Gwyneth Paltrow, a long-time friend and VIP client of ours, we bring you an immersive culinary challenge—how would you fare feeding a family on a food-stamp budget? You’ll be chauffeured via Uber to a suitable grocery store to procure your ingredients. True to statistical trends, this store will be located in the middle of a “food desert,” where nutritious options are scarce. If you do not have a family of your own, a family will be provided for you. Starting at $2,000

Extended Journeys Experience all the world has to offer.

We at Walk A Mile know that sometimes you have to travel far in order to find yourself. Our extended journeys will spark your empathy on a global scale, through meticulously planned 10-day tours. From the minute you step off the plane, every detail of your trip has been designed to optimize your experience and spark a deep, holistic understanding of another culture. After all, you haven’t just read about it—you’ve lived it.

Our Current Worldwide Opportunities

Syrian Refugee: After landing in Damascus, you’ll tag along with a real Syrian family as they make the harrowing journey from war-torn Syria through Turkey and across the Mediterranean (by raft!) to a refugee camp in Lesbos, Greece. There, you’ll sleep in tents with over 5,000 fellow refugees, most of them women and children, before traveling onward to one of three popular European destinations currently accepting Syrian asylum requests: Paris, Berlin, or Stockholm. Starting at $12,000

African Village: Experience the third world firsthand. Go beyond a luxury safari tour and integrate yourself fully into African culture by spending time in an authentic African village. We know African culture isn’t monolithic—that’s why we have three different countries for you to choose from: Ethiopia, Nigeria, and South Africa. Remember, this is no vacation. You’ll be expected to pull your weight as a real member of the community: aiding in irrigation, education of local children (those friendships will last a lifetime!) and other long-term infrastructure-building activities like purchasing authentic cultural jewelry for your entire family at open-air markets. To aid you in your journey, we’ve paired you with a wise shaman whose unparalleled knowledge of ancient customs will fill your trip with sublime understanding. Starting at $12,000

Full Body Transformations
Physically become Another.

Sometimes, our own bodies are the biggest obstacle to unlocking our empathy. Not anymore! With Walk A Mile’s customized full-body transformation programs, you’ll be able to experience alternate points of view free from the pre-conceptions imposed upon you by your appearance. You’ll be paired with one of our embodiment consultants to optimize your physical immersion—we’ve thought of everything, from hair and makeup to custom prosthetics. All you have to do is walk out into the world and truly experience life as someone else.

Available Bodies

Dating As a Woman: Due to overwhelming popular demand, we’ve designed an immersive online-dating experience for our male-identifying clientele. In the wake of scores of accounts from women facing harassment and unsolicited lewd advances from their online suitors, many men have searched inside themselves and wondered, “hey....is it really that bad?” Don’t take those women’s word for it—find out for yourself what it’s like to online date as a woman with the help of an expert-crafted profile that transposes your own interests, personal details, and appearance into a realistically believable female form. Starting at $500

Obesity: We’ve all experienced some degree of discomfort in our bodies. But for those struggling with obesity, this discomfort is often compounded by existing in a world that is, quite literally, too small. What would it be like to have your body constantly scrutinized? Now’s your chance to find out. You’ll be fitted with a bespoke body-mass-index-maximizing suit (air-cooled with discreet interior vents for your comfort, of course) and tasked with navigating everyday situations such as ordering food, shopping for clothing, and boarding an airplane. Starting at $500

Disability: What’s it like to navigate the world in a wheelchair? How does it feel not to be able to use your legs? Most people must leave these questions up to their imagination unless tragedy strikes, but you aren’t most people. Choose from our Wheelchair For A Day experience, where you’ll be fitted with a state-of-the-art motorized wheelchair of your very own, or—for the more committed empathizer—our weeklong Paralysis Simulation experience, in which a licensed anesthesiologist will guide you through a series of harmless daily injections that will temporarily render you partially paralyzed from the waist down. Starting at $3,000

Transracial Identity: We live in an age of transcending binaries. The gender binary has all but disappeared, so, you may be asking yourself, why can’t racial boundaries disappear as well? We agree, and that’s why we’ve worked with transracial activist Rachel Dolezal to design our week-long, immersive Transracial Identity experience. You’ll be coached on everything from speech and mannerisms to dance and, of course, hairstyling, and paired with a passing mentor who will be with you every step of the way. This experience can be combined with our Stop-and-Frisk package upon request. Starting at $5,000

Animal Abuse: We believe empathy doesn’t only extend to other human beings. We’re all animals, anyway! Get back in touch with your animal instincts through one of our weekend stays in an authentic working animal shelter. This isn’t just any passive volunteer experience—you’ll undergo training from a licensed animal behavior specialist and be placed in a cage alongside other adoptable shelter animals. You’ll even eat a specially-formulated dog-food-replica meal replacement during your stay, and go on walks led by our handlers (kneepads will be provided). For an extra fee, this experience includes a one-on-one meet and greet with singer and animal activist Sarah McLachlan. Starting at $3,000

The American Dream Package Discover the experiences of those right in your own backyard.

Live first-hand some of the most popular issues of today – and know what you’re talking about the next time one of these hot topics come up around the water cooler. Be able to share your new knowledge with your friends and colleagues upon your return, and be a part of connecting people across the country.

Flint Water Crisis:

The town of Flint, Michigan is all over the news lately: shots of taps flowing with murky brown water, worried parents clutching their children. What would it be like to question whether the water you’re drinking every day might be poisoning you? It’s hard to fathom, but with our deluxe Flint Water Crisis experience, you’ll be able feel this anxiety firsthand—we’ll even test your blood for Lead poisoning* at the end of your stay! Check in to our quaint suburban ranch in the heart of Flint for a weekend you’ll never forget. Starting at $2,000

*the Walk A Mile Flint, Michigan house has been fitted with a state of the art water filtration system that removes all Lead from the water and replaces it with a special blend of harmless chemicals that replicate the look and feel of Lead contamination.

Native American Reservation: You’ve learned about Sacajawea in school, and you’ve probably heard about the controversy surrounding the Washington Redskins (we know, talk of sports is rather gauche). But what does it really mean to be Native American in the modern-day United States? You’ll be dropped off at the center of a real Native American reservation in the rolling pastures of South Dakota, with miles between you and the closest modern conveniences and only your feet to transport you. You’ll go deeper than teepees and ceremonial dances to come face to face with the sobering statistics that shadow every conversation about Native American culture—from drug trafficking to abject poverty, all presented in stark relief against the breathtaking backdrop of the American West. Starting at $12,000

Crossing The Border: Search patrols. Spotlights. Miles of low shrubbery with nowhere to hide...and only one shot to make it across in one piece. Do you have what it takes to cross the border from Mexico to the United States? You’ll have the honor of accompanying a real family of illegal immigrants as they make this unforgettable journey. Our border liasons have taken great care to cultivate a positive relationship with all law-enforcement personnel to ensure that you will emerge ultimately unscathed if apprehended. Starting at $12,000

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this real?
Well we sure hope not. But if this seems like something you'd be into, there are plenty of people to help you out. Gweneth Paltrow's GOOP, for one. We hear she's a woman of the people. Tourism Options like VolunTourism, Zicasso, and Virtuoso are pretty slick. Very synergized.

Where else can I learn some empathy?
There's a whole field of people involved in the production of empathy in a myriad of formats. We like to package it up for you, but if you want to look around for yourself here are a few suggestions –

LA Gang Tours will take you on a bus through Los Angeles's notorious gang areas. You can look out at them in true safari style.
Tyra Banks did a riveting special on Fat Hateration: The Final Frontier of Discrimination. No description necessary, really, except to say she puts on a fat suit.
The VR experience of Clouds over Sidra brings you to the Za’atari camp in Jordan and makes a Syrian Refugee. For real.
If you don't want to listen to any actual women, listen to this guy. He dressed as a woman on Tinder because he really just likes wigs.
Who doesn't like a good fight? Watch this one go down over some noms. First hand.

No, but for real. I'd like to do some critical thinking about empathy, can you help?
Well, if you insist,
Paul Bloom's "Against Empathy" in the Boston Review
Leslie Jamison wrote an insightful essay on pain tourism in her book Empathy Exams, and discussed it with Jeffery Gleaves in Harper's Magazine Blog.

Who made this?
We are Ava Burke and Lucy Bonner, designers currently in the Design & Technology MFA program at Parsons School of Design. We have created this piece for our Alternate Futures course in response to the troubling trend of using "empathy" as self-aggrandizement. We believe this actually derails important conversations about the complex issues facing our world.
